Desert Hill Dwellings is a small residential development located in Cerritos, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

The design fulfills the clients’ desire for two independent units and two separate guest rooms, all centered around a shared pool and a communal dining and cooking area.

Perched on a steep hill, the project seeks to seamlessly integrate with the natural landscape by employing a stepped design, with terraced volumes that never exceed the height of a single floor.

The house is designed with a strong focus on bioclimatic principles.

The walls, made of rammed earth blocks, provide excellent thermal mass, while the elevated stilts keep the house dry and minimize heat loss during chilly winter nights.

Cooling is also optimized through a meticulous analysis of the building’s openings, with larger windows oriented to the north to maximize natural light and ventilation, and smaller openings on other facades to minimize heat gain.
